Survey Reveals Global Plastic Surgery Statistics

Ever wondered where the United States ranked when it came to plastic surgery procedures? Thanks to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and its invitation to approximately 20,000 plastic surgeons worldwide to participate in a study, as well as national societies, the global plastic surgery statistics have been collected and tabulated. For the ISAPS International Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2011, special thanks go to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Brazilian Society for heavily promoting the ISAPS survey to their members. For the 2011 survey, data was collected from 996 plastic surgeons around the world.

The International Survey was entirely focused on board certified or national equivalent plastic surgeons. The top 10 countries by number of plastic surgeons are as follows:

  1. U.S. with 5,950 plastic surgeons
  2. Brazil with 5,024 plastic surgeons
  3. China with 2,000 plastic surgeons
  4. Japan with 1,831 plastic surgeons
  5. Mexico with 1,518 plastic surgeons
  6. Italy with 1,500 plastic surgeons
  7. South Korea with 1,250 plastic surgeons
  8. India with 955 plastic surgeons
  9. France with 953 plastic surgeons
  10. Colombia with 950 plastic surgeons

Despite the fact that the U.S. ranks number one with the greatest number of plastic surgeons, according to the study, Asia ranks number one in the number of procedures performed by plastic surgeons with a total of 4,336,866 (29.5%) procedures performed in 2011, with North America following in second with 4,188,171 procedures (28.5%), and Europe ranking number three with 3,544,572 procedures (24.1%). Africa ranks number four with 238,964 (1.6%), and Oceana ranks number five with 127,952 (0.9%) procedures performed in 2011.

Top Surgical Procedures World-Wide

While breast augmentation is the leading surgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, in the world, lipoplasty, otherwise known as liposuction ranked number one in 2011. The top ten surgical procedures in the world for 2011 were in the following order:

  1. Lipoplasty (liposuction)
  2. Breast augmentation
  3. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  4. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  5. Rhinoplasty
  6. Breast lift
  7. Breast reduction (for women)
  8. Facelift
  9. Gynecomastia (male breast reduction)
  10. Otoplasty (ear surgery)

What about the worldwide non-surgical procedures? According to the 2011 study, Botox ranked number one with 3,179,652 procedures which comes as no surprise, with hyaluronic acid ranking second, followed by laser hair removal, autologous fat injections, IPL laser treatment, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, noninvasive tightening, laser skin resurfacing, calcium hydroxylapatite, laser-assisted lipoplasty, sclerotherapy, and finally dermabrasion with a total of 8,336,758 nonsurgical procedures performed around the world in 2011.

It's apparent that both surgical and nonsurgical methods are a major part of both Western and Eastern societies and the numbers of procedures performed on an annual basis are only expected to grow in the upcoming years ahead.
