Breast Reduction Can Take Care Of Chronic Pain Once and For All

All bodies are different and unique. Breasts come in different shapes and sizes, and often, they aren’t in proportion with the rest of the body. In the case of oversized breasts, this can cause a number of problems.

Among the more common problems caused by excessively large breasts are constant neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, posture issues, and rashes beneath the breasts. To combat such symptoms, women come in for breast-reduction surgery.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

Breast-reduction surgery first involves a consultation with Dr. Miranda, who will ask you a number of questions regarding your medical history and your reasons for seeking breast reduction. He may take pictures and measurements of the breasts for the record. He will also ask you about your goals for the surgery, and a breast exam or a mammogram may be ordered.

In order to prepare for the surgery, it is essential that you are physically fit and healthy. After the surgery, the recovery period requires that you prepare with plenty of ice at home, along with clean washcloths, towels, and gauze. You will also be advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing and special creams and ointments as prescribed.

Insurance does mostly cover breast-reduction surgery, especially if it is causing hindrance in the patient’s day- to-day activities.

How Does Breast-Reduction Surgery Work?

Breast-reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be done at an outpatient facility. You may be allowed to go home the same day, or you may be asked to stay the night. The procedure time will vary depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.

During the procedure, your San Francisco plastic surgeon Dr. Miranda will make incisions. The placement and position of these will be determined by the amount of tissue to be removed. Typical options for incisions include donut (around the areola), lollipop (around the areola and downward to the breast crease), and anchor (around the areola, down to the crease, and across the crease in a curve).

Through the incisions, excess glandular breast tissue, fat, and skin will be removed before the nipple and areola are repositioned. Draining tubes may be used, and the incisions will be stitched up and dressed with medical gauze.

Recovery After Breast Reduction

The recovery period after the breast-reduction procedure will last up to one to two weeks. Patients are generally advised to wear a supportive and comfortable surgical bra. During follow-up appointments, bandages and stitches will be removed.

Taking time off from work will be advised. Patients are also advised to not indulge in strenuous physical activities for at least a month after surgery. Over time, post-surgical swelling and bruising will reduce. Once it has fully reduced, the patient will be able to admire the results of their procedure.
