Otoplasty
San Francisco

Not all ear surgeries are performed by otoplasty specialists looking to correct aural hearing problems. Some are done instead to improve the appearance of a person's ears. Disfigured ears as well as those that noticeably protrude from the head can be inhibitive to those suffering from the problem.

Candidates for an Otoplasty

Children ages 4 through 14 are the best candidates for our San Francisco otoplasty to improve these types of disfigurations and problems, as they are the ones most likely to make a quick recovery and experience long-lasting results. Specifically, ear surgery can be used for the following treatments:

  • Restoring ears to a natural shape
  • Minimizing particularly large ears (overly large ears is a rare condition referred to as macrotia)
  • Bringing balance to the ears and face
  • Diminishing protruding ears on one or both sides of the head
  • Fixing adult dissatisfaction with an ear surgery that was performed earlier in their life

What To Expect During & After Your Otoplasty

No matter what type of ear surgery you have selected for yourself or your child, you can expect for anesthesia to be administered prior to the actual operation. This will ensure that no discomfort, pain or fear is felt during the surgery itself.

In most cases, you, your child and your plastic surgeon will together decide upon the type of anesthesia that will work best for surgery. Included in your options could be local anesthesia, general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Ear surgeries performed to correct the protrusion of one or both ears will include incisions that are typically made on the back portion of a patient's ear (where scarring will be difficult to see). In cases where it is absolutely necessary to incise from the front of the ear, the incision will be made within the folds of the ear where scarring will again be practically hidden from view.

Sutures may be made internally to secure the ear's cartilage in place once the ear has been reshaped to its desired form. Once the otoplasty has been completed you will be able see results nearly immediately. Stitches and dressing may inhibit the noticeability at first, but once you are allowed to remove the bandages from the ear you will immediately notice its new shape, even during the initial healing processes. After the procedure, our San Francisco otoplasty patient's ears will appear equal in size, proportional in shape to the rest of the head and appropriately positioned.
