What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a revolutionary non-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedure that reduces stubborn pockets of fat on the body. For those who are looking for subtle body-contouring and sculpting without the risks of invasive surgery, CoolSculpting is the best option.
Developed by world-class researchers Dieter Manstein, MD, Ph.D and R. Rox Anderson, MD of the Wellman Center of Photomedicine at General Hospital, CoolSculpting has been FDA approved for cosmetic body sculpting.

What is Coolsculpting like?
The CoolSculpting device, designed by Zeltiq Aesthetics, Inc., has a variety of applicators which are used to target specific areas of the body (i.e. lovehandles, stomach, saddlebags, bra rolls, inner thighs, under the chin, etc.) Once the applicator is placed on the treatment area, the tissue and fat are drawn into the applicator with a light suction.
The cooling panels within the applicator then slowly reduce the temperature of the fat to just above freezing for a 35 to 60 minute cycle while the patient sits comfortably and awake—perhaps reading or enjoying Netflix on one of our iPads. Some patients report minor discomfort, but generally the process is painless.
Over the next 8 weeks following the procedure, the body slowly rids itself the fat cells frozen by CoolSculpting. Studies show an average of 20% fat reduction in the treatment area after each cycle.
How does it work?
Cryolipolysis is the process that makes CoolSculpting possible. Building on the knowledge that fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than skin cells, CoolSculpting involves lowering the temperature of the fat cells in the targeted area to just above freezing. Imagine when you place a pot of soup in the refrigerator and the fat coagulates and collects at the top while the liquid remains below. The carefully measured cooling process targets only the fat cells and avoids any damage to the skin cells and surrounding structures. The body then naturally rids itself of these treated fat cells over the following 8 weeks.
Is it right for me?
CoolSculpting is the perfect treatment option for anyone who is looking to remove excess fat deposits that are not responding to diet or exercise. Though liposuction is still the best procedure for more extensive fat removal, CoolSculpting can provide more subtle results without the risks of invasive surgery. The most common areas for CoolSculpting are:
- Flanks (lovehandles)
- Upper Abdomen
- Lower Abdomen (spare tire)
- Inner Thighs
- Outer Thighs (saddlebags)
- Bra Rolls
- Submentum (double chin)
- Back of the arms
- Above the knees
