The process of salvaging a limb can only be done with a well-coordinated multidisciplinary team that may include an expert team of Plastic, General, Vascular, Orthopedic, and Podiatric surgeons. The Pacific Plastic Surgery Group has treated numerous patients that would otherwise be considered for amputation and have gone on to avoid amputation and avoiding a mentally physically debilitating procedure.
About the Procedure
Limb salvage generally involves a staged process that requires careful planning and several surgeries. Repair often starts with clearing out infected and nonviable tissue, repairing broken bones, and re-establishing blood flow to ischemic tissue before wounds are reconstructed with grafts and/or flaps.
